Happy New Year!
I resolve to pray daily for those in a situation like mine. And I hope that fellow Christian siblings out there who “know how it is” will also be praying for me.
We need a Christian community to support each other mentally, emotionally, and most of all, spiritually. For me, it is difficult living a life devoted to Christ, when most of my life is spent at a mundane, unfulfilling, and unchallenging job.
And certainly it is a misunderstood problem in the church. After all, we are taught to be grateful for what God has given us. But who said any of us are not grateful? We can be grateful for the provision, but still dislike it at the same time. The two are not mutually exclusive.
Being A Tree
I love what Thomas Merton writes about trees:
“A tree gives glory to God by being a tree. For in being what God means it to be it is obeying Him. It “consents,” so to speak, to His creative love. It is expressing an idea which is in God and which is not distinct from the essence of God, and therefore a tree imitates God by being a tree. The more a tree is like itself, the more it is like Him. If it tried to be like something else which it was never intended to be, it would be less like God and therefore it would give Him less glory.” – Thomas Merton, New Seeds of Contemplation
God did not create me to do the job that I have. I know He didn’t. My heart is not in it. It represents an accumulation of bad choices, fear, and even being a Baby Boomer. I am deeply convicted by “The more a tree is like itself, the more it is like Him.”
HOW Is Not A Pity Party
My purpose here is not to have a pity party or as a real Baby Boomer would say “[have] clouds in my coffee…”. It is to let you know there is someone who is experiencing the same situation as you. The purpose of this blog is to share thoughts, ideas, devotionals, etc., that helped me through 1 or 2 days. Maybe it will help you too.
And back to what I said earlier – I really want us to begin a Christian community. A group to discuss common problems and solutions. Other people who have the same struggle and understand “how it is”. Others to participate in mutual prayer.
Face it-corporate America is godless. I know that my witness has suffered in a place that desperately needs it. And I guess that some of you reading this, well, yours has too. So while we are stuck in the rut, let’s make the most of it by being effective witnesses for Jesus Christ. I’m not talking about Bible bashing (though it would be a great release to do that to some of the people I work with). I’m talking about every day you go to prison, Babylon, Egypt, the pit, whatever you call it. Every day that you go, you are walking on water, reaching for Jesus’ outstretched hand, and not being distracted by the pit of hell that surrounds you.
2016 is my year to decide, one way or another, to get out of the rut. Because here is the truth:
And ruts are no fun.
They are just not.
Prayer:
Father God, Lift me out of the rut! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
